German Supplement Listings: Separate a PZN, Product Notification and Medicine Authorisation
Use three different evidence fields for a pharmacy identifier, a food-supplement notification and any actual medicine authorisation.
We have not performed hands-on testing of the products discussed. Manufacturer references and official guidance support the documented information below; comparison exercises are our editorial guidance.
A German product listing may display a pharmaceutical-sounding code while clearly calling the item a food supplement. A notification acknowledgement can add another official-looking document. These pieces do not all establish the same thing. This guide separates the records using a real manufacturer example and German government explanations, without endorsing the product or claiming a continent-wide classification rule.
Read the product class beside the identifier
Doppelherz’s consulted Magnesium 400 page identifies the product as a Nahrungsergänzungsmittel, or food supplement, and provides a PZN alongside a GTIN. Germany’s Federal Centre for Nutrition explains that PZNs also identify pharmacy products including food supplements and are a logistical aid rather than a quality seal. Keep the code in an identifier field; do not replace the product’s stated class with medicine because the code sounds pharmaceutical.
Keep notification acknowledgement separate from approval
The German federal administrative portal describes notification of food supplements to BVL and explicitly says that it does not result in authorisation or approval. It also explains that marketability is not checked through that notification. A seller who supplies a notification acknowledgement has therefore supplied evidence of that administrative step, not a certificate establishing every legal or product claim. Do not infer a notification for the manufacturer example merely because it has a PZN.
Worked example: untangle an official-looking document packet
Imagine an illustrative seller sends a PZN screenshot and a BVL submission confirmation in response to a request for medicine authorisation. Create separate rows for pharmacy identifier and notification evidence, preserving the exact product and issuer on each. Leave the medicine-authorisation request unanswered unless an actual relevant document is supplied. The packet may contain useful information, but two different administrative references should not be merged into one approval badge.
Preserve the country and exact package
This guide concerns German identifiers and the German notification process. It does not define the status of the same ingredient in every EU member state, the UK or the United States. Check the offered product’s complete local label and exact package rather than transferring a code or document from another size or formula. If a legal-classification question remains, ask the responsible authority or an appropriately qualified local professional with the actual record. Neither the PZN nor a notification can establish personal suitability, efficacy or the physical contents of a delivered bottle. The buyer’s useful endpoint is a properly attributed evidence table showing which question each document answers and which question is still open.
Compare the trade-offs
| Option | Useful when | Purchase limitation |
|---|---|---|
| PZN | Exact pharmacy-product identifier | Not a quality seal or medicine-authorisation document |
| BVL notification | Evidence of the administrative submission | Does not itself certify marketability or approval |
| Medicine authorisation | Request the relevant exact document if claimed | Cannot be substituted by a code plus acknowledgement |
Your purchase checklist
- Keep identifier, notification and authorisation fields separate.
- Retain the local food-supplement class as printed.
- Do not generalize German procedures across Europe.
