Foods with Added Plant Stanols: Keep the Special Label Statements with the Grocery Package
Do not reduce an EU fortified-food label to one ingredient amount while omitting the accompanying category-specific statements.
We have not performed hands-on testing of the products discussed. Manufacturer references and official guidance support the documented information below; comparison exercises are our editorial guidance.
A search for plant stanols can return a spread as well as a supplement-style listing. The food package brings a different record: a complete food ingredient list and specific accompanying labeling statements. This guide uses an Irish manufacturer example and an EU regulation text to show what a documentation request should retain. It does not adopt a cholesterol claim or advise consumption.
Identify the actual food and its ingredient declaration
Benecol’s consulted Irish Buttery Taste Spread page supplies a food nutrition table and an ingredient list including plant stanol ester, with plant stanols expressed per 100 grams. Record that as the spread’s ingredient declaration. It is not a capsule Supplement Facts panel. The remaining food ingredients and regional package identity still matter; extracting the stanol line alone produces an incomplete description of the offered food.
Locate the category-specific information block
Annex III of Regulation (EU) 1169/2011, in the consulted April 2025 consolidated text hosted by FAOLEX, includes additional particulars for foods with added phytosterols or phytostanols and their esters. The provisions address the added-sterol or added-stanol identity, quantities, portions and accompanying statements concerning intended consumers and supervision. Some statements have specified visibility relationships. Save or request the complete current local label rather than expecting an ingredient line to contain every required particular.
Distinguish a manufacturer FAQ from the package
Benecol’s Irish FAQ separately discusses groups for whom its added-stanol foods may not be nutritionally appropriate. That is a useful company reference, but this guide does not assess anyone’s circumstances or reproduce an intake limit. Keep the FAQ as background and the exact supplied food label as package evidence. Do not certify a seller’s compliance from a partial website excerpt, and do not substitute a UK or US package for an Irish offer merely because the brand is familiar.
Worked example: expand an ingredient-only comparison
Suppose an illustrative shopping card displays a spread’s plant-stanol amount and deletes all remaining text as generic small print. Add fields for exact regional food identity, full ingredients, the special accompanying statements and readable package images. Ask the seller for the missing information block before treating the card as complete. Keep a supplement appearing in the same search in its own record with its own product class. The practical improvement is document completeness, not a ranking by promised effect. A buyer should not turn the regulatory text into self-selected consumption instructions or combine amounts across foods and supplements. Questions about personal relevance belong with a qualified professional who can review the complete actual product information. The final record should show both what the manufacturer page establishes and which parts of the delivered package remain unverified.
Compare the trade-offs
| Option | Useful when | Purchase limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Irish spread | Full food ingredients and nutrition table | Do not import a capsule-panel structure |
| Additional EU particulars | Complete accompanying statements and visibility context | One extracted ingredient line is insufficient |
| Offered regional package | Readable matching label evidence | A brand FAQ cannot prove the seller’s supplied label |
Your purchase checklist
- Keep the full fortified-food record with the named regional package.
- Request the special statement block rather than cropping it out.
- Do not convert required labeling into an individual intake plan.
